Halloween surprise goes down a treat at Belfast Zoo

The elephants at Belfast Zoo have been enjoying spooky treats as the zoo gets into the festive mood ahead of Halloween.

The zoo’s elderly rescue elephants, Dhunja and Yhetto were surprised with some Halloween fun! They squished, squashed, and stooped on some giant pumpkins as part of their daily enrichment.

The pumpkins aren't just a spooky treat for the animals at the zoo. Providing items that they don't regularly receive helps to stimulate the animals physically and mentally. This type of enrichment is used to help keep the animals happy and healthy as it encourages natural behaviour and provides stimulation.

This Halloween, trick or treat yourself to fiendish fun at Boo at the Zoo.

On Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th October, little witches and wizards can enjoy a weekend of mischievous merriment for all the family, with a range of eerie activities including pumpkin decorating and face painting!

Visitors can even bring their own carved pumpkins to give to our animals for enrichment. You can watch the zoo animals tuck into pumpkin activities of their own as they enjoy some hall-zoo-ween enrichment at feeding times.

We will be using any donated pumpkins up until the 31st October and will be recycling seeds for animal feeds and sensory play.

The zoo is open every day 10am – 4pm with last admission at 2.30pm.
