Gary Lightbody's iconic 'Chasing Cars' guitar up for auction at Cash for Kids Mission Christmas Gala Ball
Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody is supporting our local Cash for Kids Mission Christmas campaign, by generously donating a guitar that’s close to his heart.
A 1978 Fender Telecaster Deluxe Guitar, that's particularly special for the band, as that was used to write and record their hit “Chasing Cars”. The guitar is also signed by Gary Lightbody himself.
This donation will be a real highlight in the charity’s upcoming auction at their Mission Christmas Gala Ball, taking place on Saturday 29th November at the Europa Hotel, Belfast.
Speaking about the guitar, Gary said: ““This was the guitar I wrote and recorded Chasing Cars with. I wrote the song in 2005 and we recorded it in Grouse Lodge Studios in Westmeath in early 2006. This guitar was also the main guitar I used on our tours for Final Straw and Eyes Open.”
The guitar has appeared on album covers and was a staple of Snow Patrol’s live performances during their rise to international fame. It represents a rare opportunity for fans and collectors to own a piece of music history, while supporting a vital cause.
In addition to Gary Lightbody’s iconic guitar, the charity auction hosted by Wilson’s Auctions, will feature three other exclusive lots including another sought-after piece of Northern Irish cultural history - an embellished Terry Bradley print, generously donated by the artist himself.
Known for his bold, expressive style and deep connection to Belfast’s artistic heritage, Bradley’s work is highly collectible and adds a powerful local touch to the auction lineup.
All proceeds from the auction will go directly to Cash for Kids Northern Ireland, helping ensure that no child wakes up without gifts on Christmas morning. In 2024, the Mission Christmas campaign supported over 17,000 local children, and the need continues to grow.
