After an unseasonably warm start to winter forecasters are warning about a potential “shock to the system”

Temperatures are expected to take a tumble this weekend as Northern Ireland experiences its first taste of winter.

According to the Met Office; "Showers are expected to turn wintry, especially across higher ground through Saturday night and into Sunday. Icy conditions with overnight frost is likely."

The Antrim hills, Mournes and Sperrins will likely wake up to a dusting of snow.

With night time temperatures expected to fall below zero, drivers may have to brace themselves for frost in the mornings - worth stocking up on de-icer.

It's unlikely any snow showers will settle at lower levels.

The warning comes into effect at 9pm Saturday and is valid until 11am Sunday

NORTHERN IRELAND WEEKEND FORECAST

Saturday - Sunny intervals and occasional showers, snow on high ground. Feeling cold. Highs of 5°C.

Sunday & beginning of next week - Widespread frost. Further showers with snow on the hills, increasing risk of wintry showers at lower levels.
