'DUP has been misrepresented' - Nigel Dodds

The DUP's leader at Westminster, Nigel Dodds, has insisted that his party will not have sway over the Conservatives when it comes to social issues like same sex marriage and abortion.

It follows hundreds of women marching on Downing Street on Saturday to protest any deal between the party and the Conservatives.

Theresa May needs the support of the DUP in a 'confidence and supply' arrangement in order to be able to govern.

"People can always go back through the archives of any political party and find individuals saying things or policies from 20, 30 years ago," said Mr Dodds.

"But they need to read our manifesto and look at the recent years in Northern Ireland where the DUP has been the main partner in government with republicans to move this province forward."

The negotiations with the Conservatives over that agreement on their support continue.
