Downpatrick: Prayers to be offered following murder of man and attempted murder of priest

Both happened in the town on Sunday

Prayers will be offered this morning for a priest who seriously injured in his church in Downpatrick on Sunday, and a man found dead in a house in the town on the same day.

Meanwhile a murder investigation is also continuing following the death of Stephen Brannigan - who was in his 50s.

It’s thought both events could be connected and a man is in custody being questioned on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Downpatrick Family of Parishes said in a statement on social media last night, "Canon Murray remains in a Stable Condition this evening."

"Please continue with your prayerful support. We want to thank all those who have phoned from all corners of the globe, those of other faiths. and all those who have helped in any way over the last 24 hours - it is sincerely appreciated."

Meanwhile the family of murdered Stephen Brannigan has released a statement saying they are in "shock, pain and total heartbreak" at the news of his death.

They have also offered their "prayers and deep concern" for Canon John Murray.

Mass will be led by Bishop Alan McGuckian at St Colmcille's Church in Downpatrick this morning.
