A delivery driver has been left shaken after a weapon was held to his face in Belfast City centre.

The robbery and attempted hijacking happened last night at around 9.45.

A police spokesperson said: "A delivery driver was parked in the Donegall Place area, when an unknown man approached his vehicle and opened the door, armed with a blade and a sharpened piece of metal.

"The victim reported that the suspect held the weapon to his face and told him to get out of the car. The suspect sat down in the driver's seat and lifted a sum of money from the dashboard, before a struggle ensued."

The suspect, then ran off in the direction of City Hall. Police described him as being aged in his mid 20s to 30s, of average height and build, with a stubbly brown moustache and wearing black tracksuit bottoms and a jacket with the hood up.

Significant damage was also caused to the vehicle during the incident.

Police are appealing for witnesses and are urging anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them. The number to call is 101, quoting reference 1557 of 9/3/24.
