Belfast voted one of the top cities for happy dogs
We're a nation obsessed with our furry friends!
A study carried out by the team at OnBuy Pet Supplies, analysed a number of important factors, across various cities in the UK. Everything from pet-friendly accommodation to dog parks and pet shops.
The top five cities with the happiest dogs are Swansea, Plymouth, Manchester, Blackpool and of course Belfast.
Scoring the highest number of points for dog population, Belfast was credited with having the most friendly pooches, otherwise known as 'social butterfly pets.'
The cities with the fewest dog-friendly facilities are Oxford, Cambridge, Southend-on-Sea, Milton Keynes and Bradford.
How do you know if your dog is happy/unhappy?
To help us understand our pets and their needs more, OnBuy Pet Supplies got in contact with Natalia Ashton, author of Perfect Cocker Spaniel Guide.
“A happy dog has a dreamy soft gaze and relaxed eyelids, lips are loose, the forehead is wrinkle-free. The body is completely relaxed, the ears are floppy, and the tail is raised to the mid-level and wagging.
And what about a stressed dog? “Surprisingly, one of the first signs is an exaggerated yawn. A stressed pooch will have tension in his body, try to avoid eye contact, have enlarged pupils, raised eyebrows or tension in his forehead and ears, which he is likely to keep pulled back or erected and pointy (depending on a breed and situation). Stressed dogs may start to destroy the furniture or rip out carpets as their way to relieve stress through chewing.
How to keep your dog happy?
“Choose activities that suit your dog’s age to avoid overstimulation. Have at least one walk a day and allow your pooch to run and exercise depending on his age and physical abilities. Visit new places, especially if your dog is an adventurer and enjoys these activities. Let your pooch enjoy a safe chew or a stuffed toy - licking and chewing are really relaxing. Learn your dog’s habits - not every dog likes to be touched by strangers, some would rather share their time with people than dogs, others would prefer to avoid certain pooches or places.”

The Dirty Onion love dogs so much, they run events specifically for them 🤣 They've had everything from doggy yogo to doggy dress up! The space offers a modern take on the traditional Irish pub, with live entertainment and musical sessions.
Sunflower Pub
The Sunflower is synonymous with Belfast's pub scene. The doors are open to all, including doggos. Enjoy a pint of the black stuff upstairs during a comedy gig, or maybe a cider in the sun out back, the Sunflower has it all.
Established Coffee
Another busy coffee shop in the heart of Belfast's Cathedral Quarter, Established serves incredible coffee, tasty snacks and delicious food. With spacious facilities and a minimalistic vibe, dogs are more than welcome.
The Jailhouse
The Jailhouse is one of Belfast's most popular hangout spots, and the team here welcome dogs throughout the day. With designated doggy areas, you can relax and unwind with your pooch and still have a great time out.
Cargo by Vertigo
Of course Belfast's biggest outdoor beer garden allows furry four-legged friends to join in on the fun. They even supply complimentary water dishes so you don't have to worry about them catching a thirst there too.
Common Market
Belfast's newest street food entertainment venue Common Market is open Thursday -Sunday, from midday to late. You can find it off Dunbar Street in the Cathedral Quarter - spend the day exploring each foodie spot and enjoy some craft beers. Dogs will love the chilled atmosphere too.
The Bone Yard
Just look at that face, we love a dog that knows how to party. The Bone Yard is one of Belfast's biggest outdoor bars, complete with food trucks and quirky containers. You don't have to worry about the weather, part of the courtyard is covered, plus they have heated lamps on standby too.
Brøn
Brøn is a relatively new hang-out spot in the east of the city, just off the Comber Greenway, this café is a great stop off on any family days out.
Guilt Trip
Experts in all things signature coffee and donuts, your four legged pall will love Guilt Trip. You can smell the baking from down the street, best to keep your dog on a lead just in case they get too excited.
Al Gelato
The ice cream here is so popular, even dogs queue up outside for a taste. Al Gelato is one of the 'coolest' dessert hangouts in Belfast, they serve freshly made gelato all day long.
The Spaniard
Hidden in the depths of the Cathedral Quarter, this cosy hideaway is the perfect spot to while away an afternoon on a rainy day. The craic in here is mighty.
The Bowery
The Bowery is the newest addition to the Lisburn Road, offering fantastic food, yummy cocktails, live sport and weekly entertainment. You can relax on the heated terrace with your four legged friend in tow.
The Jeggy Nettle
Located on the Stranmilis Road, The Jeggy Nettle is popular with the locals all year round. Famous for their impressive whiskey collection and welcoming staff, even dogs get a seat at the table.
