Arrest after PSNI called to reports of armed man on road

A 27 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of a number of firearms offences.

It comes after armed officers were called to reports of a man, who was carrying a gun, attempting to stop cars on the Comber Road in Killinchy at around 6pm on Wednesday.

The 27 year old was arrested in the New Line Crescent area a short time later.

A search of the area was conducted and a deactivated rifle and a number of other items were recovered.

The suspect remains in police custody at this time.

Police are appealing for information.

Detective Sergeant David Cameron said he wants "anyone who was travelling on the Comber Road yesterday evening and who witnessed this man or anyone who has any information that can assist with the investigation to contact detectives in Downpatrick on 101 quoting reference number 1091 of 03/05/17.

"Information can also be passed anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
