WhatsApp launches 'View Once' image/video feature
Now where have we seen this before?
Last updated 6th Aug 2021
WhatsApp has revealed a new feature which will allow users to send videos and images that will be automatically deleted after they have been viewed once.
Anyone using the Facebook-owned messaging app can share a photo or video in 'view once' mode, allowing a single viewing before the media disappears.
On many phones, taking a photo will take up space in your camera roll and memory.
Content shared using 'view once' mode will not be saved to the recipient's Photos or Gallery, and they can't forward them through the app to another user.
WhatsApp said the feature was aimed at 'giving users even more control over their privacy.'
Users are warned to 'only send photos or videos with view once media enabled to trusted individuals' as it is still possible to take a screenshot or screen recording of the media before it disappears.
This isn't a revolutionary update - Facebook Messenger and Instagram introduced something similar last year with ‘Vanish Mode’ and it’s already common among Snapchat users.
WhatsApp is currently rolling out the feature to everyone starting this week. Make sure that you have the latest WhatsApp version on your phone to receive the new experience.
Do you struggle to maintain your monthly data allowance? Check out some of the ways you can make your mobile data last longer 👇
1) Stop auto-play on social platforms
Facebook and YouTube are two of the most heavily used apps on a smartphone, so it's no surprise that they when the auto-play function is on it eats away at your allowance.
The quickest fix for this is to switch it off in your settings, either turn it off all together, or make sure it is only on when you connect on wifi.
2) Stop apps using mobile data
Everyone has apps on their phone these days, but try turning off the background refresh. This eats up your data allowance as well as your battery life.
3) Track how much data you’re using
Go into your Settings and reset the data usage, then you'll be able to see how much each of your apps uses throughout the month. This way you can keep tabs on the data-guzzling apps.
4) Change video quality on streaming services
Try changing the quality of the video. Whilst you might want to watch some of them in 4K, try and save those for when you're on wifi. According to Netflix, streaming content in HD can use up to 3gb an hour and Ultra HD will use 7gb an hour! Either reduce the quality to standard definition (SD) or watch it on wifi.
5) Turn off push notifications on email/social platforms
Having your push notifications not only uses up your battery quickly, but it can use your data. According to research 60% of smartphone owners check their emails via a handset every day which can use 150mb a session! Remember this is all coming out of your data allowance if you aren't on wifi.
