The brand new series of Line of Duty hit our TV screens last night (Sunday 21st March), and whilst most of us were trying to work out what on earth CHIS meant and why DI Kate Fleming is no longer part of AC-12, other eagle-eyed viewers spotted something else...

In a scene during episode one which took place in the briefing room, viewers took to Twitter to reveal they'd 'spotted' former Prime Minister Theresa May whilst newcomer Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Davidson was updating the team on new leads in the Gail Vella murder case.

Of course, we can confirm it wasn't Theresa, but it certainly got fans talking during the show last night! 🙈

One viewer wrote, 'Good to see Theresa May’s keeping busy with a strong and stable cameo in #LineOfDuty', with another adding, 'Nice to see Theresa May getting some acting work #LineOfDuty'. (sic)

A third then wrote, 'Who had Theresa May in the special guest star sweepstake', with another fan jokingly saying, 'Never knew Theresa May was breaking out into the acting field....' (sic)

Theresa may not have joined the cast of series 6, but there's certainly a lot of other new faces on the show.

As well as both Kelly Macdonald (DCI Joanne Davidson) and Shalom Brune-Franklin (DC Chloe Bishop) joining the cast, the return of actor Tommy Jessop's character Terry Boyle was another major talking point from the series opener.

Terry, who has Down Syndrome, was first introduced to the show way back in series 1, when an OCG manipulated him to hiding Jackie Laverty's body in his freezer. After making a comeback during series 5, it looks like the OCG are once again using him as a scapegoat, seemingly framing him for the murder of journalist Gail Vella.

With so many unanswered questions from the opening episode of series 6, viewers are going to be hooked for the next six weeks!

Line of Duty continues every Sunday evening at 9pm on BBC One.
