It stars Keeley Hawes and Mark Stanley

Author: Alex RossPublished 18th Jul 2024

After originally airing on ITV/STV back in 2020, two-part drama series Honour has now been acquired by streaming platform Netflix, shooting straight to the top of the most-watched charts, and leaving viewers in tears in the process.

Honour is a two-part British television drama series, depicting the investigation into the real-life disappearance and murder of honour killing victim Banaz Mahmod, who was murdered on orders by her family after ending an abusive forced marriage.

What is Honour about?

Starring Keeley Hawes, Rhianne Barreto and Moe Bar-El, Honour tells the story of the real-life disappearance and murder of 20-year-old British Muslim women Banaz Mahmod, who was the victim of an 'honour' killing in 2006.

The two-part drama originally aired on ITV/STV and was created by Gwyneth Hughes, who used first hand experiences of figures from the the real-life case.

Watch the trailer for Honour below:

After watching the episodes in one sitting, viewers have expressed their sadness and heartbreak at the series.

One wrote: 'Just watched #Honour on Netflix, absolutely awful and the fact that it’s based on a true story makes it worse', with another adding: 'Honour on Netflix is so sad. I have no words it’s just sad. I would hope if this was to happen today their community would speak up but I’m not sure that’s the case'. (sic)

Another added: 'I’ve just watched ‘Honour’ on Netflix. Banaz Mahmod was a 20-year-old Iraqi Kurdish woman who lived in South London. She was murdered on the orders of her family in a so-called honour killing because she ended a violent and abusive forced marriage and started a relationship with someone of her own choosing. Her father, uncle and three cousins were later convicted of her murder. It’s a heartbreaking and emotional watch but an important one.'

A fourth commented: 'People should watch the Netflix series “Honour”. It’s an extraordinarily powerful account of the police investigation into the so-called ‘honour’ killing of Banaz Mahmod, a 20 year old British Kurdish woman. It’s hard to watch, but important, from a social/policing perspective.'

Another said: 'Just watched Honour on Netflix😓 what a sad sad story!' (sic)
