99-year-old army veteran Captain Tom Moore has captured the hearts of the nation with his incredible story and fundraising efforts for the NHS, which has now hit nearly £30 million!

After completing 100 laps of his 25m in length garden, and totally smashing his initial £1,000 target, Captain Tom has gained attention from around the world, with many people saying he should be knighted for his amazing efforts as he turns 100 next week (30th April).

As well as working with Michael Ball to record a version of 'You'll Never Walk Alone', Captain's Tom story is now also being turned into a documentary, which will air on ITV on VE Day on Friday 8th May.

The new show, titled Captain Tom's War, will document his story of his part in World War II, and show Tom looking back on his time during the war in the brutal Burma campaign, as a million Allied troops from 40 nations attempted to repel the invading forces of Imperial Japan from the British colony over almost three years, between 1941 and 1944.

As well as featuring lovable Tom, the documentary will also feature his two daughters, Lucy and Hannah, as the pair look back at old photos from their trip back to Burma.

Tom Giles, ITV's Controller of Current Affairs, said, "Captain Tom’s War will shed light on a campaign which comparatively goes unmentioned but in which our troops suffered unthinkable hardship and tens of thousands of British soldiers fought and died.

"Hearing this from Captain Tom Moore, who fought in Burma, means we will find out a lot more about the man who has done so much to raise our spirits at this time and the experience he and many others faced during World War Two on an occasion when we rightly come together to thank them for their sacrifice.”

Captain Tom entered officer training in 1940 at the age of 20, going on to serve in India before reaching Burma. There he was involved in the massive amphibious assault on Arakan, the instrumental part of recapturing the colony, before pushing on with his troops to the capital, Rangoon.

Captain Tom's War will air at 8pm on Friday 8th May on ITV.
