The Wife Carrying Championships are coming to the award-winning Dalriada Festival, Glenarm Castle from Saturday 14th to Sunday 15th July.

The race, which comes from a Scandinavian tradition where raiders needed to be quick escaping with womenfolk from neighbouring villages, features couples racing through a 100m course made up of different obstacles and fun challenges.

The top prize for finishing first is 4 nights in Venice including Flights from Belfast, Transfers and Accommodation. It is sponsored by NFU MUTUAL Ballyclare & Larne Division.

Registration is FREE and anyone can take part.

COMPETITION RULES

Wife Carrying is a potentially dangerous activity, which could result in injury. All those taking part in the race do so at their own risk.

Please follow the instructions of the competition staff and referees on the day.

All those taking part must be 18 or over.

All those carried must wear a helmet.

All entrants will start off at the same time, and the first over the line is the winner. However you will be penalised for dropping your wife.

Obstacles and water hazards will be included.

You can use any one of the many recognised holds: bridal carry, piggy-back, shoulder-ride, fireman's carry (across the shoulders), the well-recognised and very fast Estonian Hold (wife hangs upside-down on man's back, legs crossed in front of the man's face) or the not-so-fast but unique Dorking Hold (the reverse Estonian)
