It's World Vegetarian Day!
It can sometimes be difficult to find tasty and exciting vegetarian food. Let's face it, Belfast isn't exactly known as the most vegan-vegetarian friendly city, but there are lots of delicious plant-based meals on offer if you can find them.
To help you navigate we've complied a list of great vegetarian-friendly restaurants.
Being a vegetatian — or at least trying out a meat-free diet — has become mighty trendy.
Celebrities across world including Beyonce and Jay-Z are making the switch. Liam Hemsworth, Miley Cyrus, Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage and Ariana Grande have recently adopted vegetarian diets.
There are plenty of fantastic restaurants in Northern Ireland showing us meat-free food can be as vibrant and exciting to eat.
Jumon, Fountain Street
Jumon is Belfast's newest vegetarian hot spot joining the list of alternative, health conscious places popping up in the city. It offers a mostly plant based menu with an asian twist inspired by owner Nox who is from Bangkok.
Tony and Jen's, Lisburn Road
Great new healthy food place serving breakfast, brunch, dinner and healthy deserts. Run by a couple of nutritionists and food lovers (Called Tony & Jen funny enough) who are obsessed with cooking up quality food to help busy people live fit and healthy lifestyles.
Coppi, Cathedral Quarter
Right in the heart of the buzzing Cathedral Quarter, Coppi is Belfast's first cichetti bacari restaurant. Coppi has proved to be hugely popular since opening in 2012 and offers a great selection of Italian and Mediterranean cuisine served in the coolest of surroundings.
They offer a sample vegan menu that includes all the usual Italian options like risotto, pasta and pizza.
The Honest Vegan, Lisburn Road
It's not all broccoli and greens you know... The Honest Vegan offers cruelty-free and healthy vegan cuisine. Every dish on the menu is completely free of animal products, including honey. Their American pancakes are apparently a must try.
Umi Falafel, Botanic Avenue
A staple food in the Middle East, this new venture opened in Belfast last year and is proving very popular, (for those that may not know) falafel is a healthy, vegetarian food made from crushed chickpeas. Umi Falafel offers lots more than what's in the name, top picks include their grilled halloumi sandwich, sweet potato fries, spiced wedges and tasty salads.
387 Ormeau Road
An excellent spot with proper Northern Irish fifteens to die for. One of the city's newest cafe's specialising in vegan coffee, tray bakes, brunch and cakes. Who knew that vegetarian sausage rolls and oat milk lattes existed?
Boojum, Botanic Ave
A vegetarian burrito? Yes vegetarian options available at Northern Ireland's top burrito takeaway... all outlets serve protein packed beans, burritos, bowls, fajitas, tacos, and salads and will accommodate requests to omit cheese and sour cream for veganers.
