5 things students miss most about Northern Ireland

Going away for university is tough no matter where you’re from but it’s really difficult to say goodbye to Northern Ireland if you’re heading over the sea.
As students gear up to return home en-masse here are some of the things they’ll be looking forward to coming home to.
1. Food
Soda bread, wheaten bread, Tayto crisps and a good old Ulster fry are only a few of the things students miss.
A few lucky ones will have friends and family send over some bread and crisps every once in a while but we all know an Ulster fry wouldn’t travel well. On the bright side, it brings students back to their parents during the holidays. Can’t you hear the potato farls calling?
2. Our accent
Having to answer the “where are you from” question and explaining what a “poke” is a million times can be pretty exhausting. Sometimes all you want to do is sit back and revel in having the sexiest accent in the UK without having to say something for an audience. At least back home your housemates don’t chant “three hour power shower” down your ear.
3. The banter
The incredible bluntness of calling someone out for being an “eejit” or a “mucker” seems to surprise everyone outside of NI. We won’t keep quiet, actually we’ll be the ones saying “shut yer bake” while our new university friends stare at us all confused.
Ach, but it’s all a bit of banter.
4. The big names
Jamie Dornan, Snow Patrol and Liam Neeson are just a few underappreciated names outside NI. No one seems to realise the excitement that you went to school with Two Door Cinema Club when that’s your biggest source of cool points back home.
“They’re famous in Northern Ireland, okay?”
5. Sky TV
Piggy back on your parents Sky Sports or movies subscription... and your ma wonders why you just want to crash in front of the TV when you visit home.
