Calvin Harris has become the first British solo artist to smash the 1billion plays barrier on Spotify.

The Midas Touched DJ and producer’s plays on the streaming service are the equivalent of 5,000 consecutive years of listening.

It’s estimated that these plays have earned the Scottish star and his record label £4million – relatively small fry for a man who earns over £29.5million a year.

“This is a landmark achievement for Calvin and deserved recognition that he is in the elite tier of global artists,” Mark Terry, Co-President of Columbia Records UK, said. “His recent level of success has been extraordinary and something that all of us here at Columbia are very proud to be part of.”

Steve Savoca, Spotify’s VP Content and Distribution, added: “We would like to congratulate Calvin Harris on reaching the huge milestone of a billion streams on Spotify, conclusive proof if any were needed that he is one of the most popular artists on Spotify.”

Last week it was announced that Calvin’s tune ‘Summer’ was aptly the most popular song of the summer on Spotify with 160million plays.

Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea’s huge anthem ‘Problem’ was close behind Calvin in second spot.
