He says homophobia is still ‘so present’

Sam Smith has shared an example of abuse he receives online to highlight that homophobia is still prevalent.

Taking to Instagram earlier this morning, 23-year-old Sam posted a screenshot of an account set up on the image-sharing site called ‘gaysamsmith’.

Although there are no posts from the account yet it comes with the vile caption: “This is a fag, his name is sam. When he’s on, I like to cry. He is gay, but that’s ok, we can all make fun of him.”

!

Hitting back at the hate-filled account, Sam told his 4.5million followers: “This genuinely doesn't offend me, coz I'm way too tick skinned when it comes to this kind of s***.

“BUT I just wanted to share this with everyone, so you can see how homophobia is still SO PRESENT in our society!!”

Speaking at the Metro Centre in London back in March, which provides help to young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, Sam opened up about the homophobic abuse he received when he was younger.

"A bunch of boys from a rival school would shout insults at me as I walked from my home to the train station,” Sam explained. “I remember walking to the station getting 'faggot' shouted at me all the time.

"It was the most mortifying thing. Not so much for me. I knew these people were stupid, uneducated t****.

“But I was upset as I was with my friends and I wondered if they were embarrassed to be walking with me because people are hurling abuse."

In June Sam split from his partner – dancer and model Jonathan Zeizel.
