Prince William says he 'looked up to' the Queen after Princess Diana's death
The Prince opened up ahead of the Queen's birthday
Ahead of celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday, Prince William has opened up about the support he received from her after his mother sadly passed away.
He was only 15 when Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris. At the time, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were criticised for not immediately returning to Buckingham Palace, instead staying with William and Harry in Balmoral.
Speaking to Sky news, William said: "Having lost my mother at a very young age, it has been particularly important for me that I had somebody like the Queen to look up to and who has been there and has understood some of the more complex issues when you lose a loved one."
He added that his grandmother is ‘very supportive’ of his current lifestyle as he juggles being a family man, an air ambulance pilot and his royal duties.
The Queen’s official birthday will be celebrated in June though her actual birthday is tomorrow (21st April).
To mark the occasion Kensington Palace have released a portrait of the family as Royal Mail have issued special stamps with Prince George making his first appearance on them.
The Duke of Cambridge married Kate Middleton in 2011 and together they have two children, two-year-old George and Charlotte, who will celebrate her first birthday next month.
