Paul Mescal lands Oscar nomination as mother prepares for chemotherapy

Normal People’s Paul Mescal has been nominated for his first Oscar, for his role in Aftersun.
Fans of the movie were delighted to see Aftersun recognised. The drama follows the Paul’s character Callum and his on-screen daughter Sophie during a holiday in Turkey.
We’ve been told it’s a weepy one, so if you’re planning on seeing it, best bring a packet of tissues as well as popcorn.
It’s safe to say the Mescal family were bursting with pride yesterday, the 26-year-old Irish actor shared an adorable family FaceTime call following the announcement yesterday.
Paul’s musician sister Nell Mescal could be seen sobbing in the screenshot.
Sharing emotional snaps on Twitter, Nell posted: “i am so proud it is making me sick’, and “how on earth did this happen.”
Amid the Oscar nomination chaos, Nell also revealed the sad news of her mother’s upcoming chemotherapy treatment: “my mum got a haircut today in prep for her chemotherapy and then paul got nominated for an oscar life is so crazy.”
Dearbhla previously shared with her own followers on Instagram that she was diagnosed with Multiple myeloma - a type of bone marrow cancer`.
Paul is going head-to-head with fellow Irish actor Colin Farrell who has been nominated in the same Best Actor category for his role in Banshees of Inisherin.
The Banshees of Inisherin was also got nominations for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director as well as Best Original Screenplay categories.
A Northern Ireland film has also been nominated for an Oscar in the Live Action Short Film category.
Filmed entirely in Northern Ireland, An Irish Goodbye, is a black comedy about the reunion of estranged brothers Turlough and Lorcan following the untimely death of their mother.
Under the watchful eye of odd-ball parish priest Father O’Shea, the brothers’ pained reunion is worsened by the fact Turlough must now make new care arrangements for Lorcan, who has Down Syndrome.
The film stars Seamus O’Hara (The Northman, Game of Thrones), James Martin (Marcella, Ups and Downs), Paddy Jenkins (Hunger) and Michelle Fairley (Game of Thrones, Fortitude).
The 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 12th, 2023.
