The fervently anticipated fifth season of Games of Thrones will return to TV screens at 9pm on Monday 13th April!

US viewers of the hit fantasy show will get to see the first episode a day earlier on Sunday 12th April when it airs on HBO. Lucky things.

News of the American return was announced on HBO’s Twitter feed last night along with the caption “Send a raven and spread the word.”

The fifth season adapts material from A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons - the fourth and fifth novels in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series.

Filming began in July 2014 and finished shortly before Christmas taking in locations such as Northern Ireland, Spain and Croatia.

Alongside the (surviving) characters there will also be several new faces including Welsh acting veteran Jonathan Pryce as The High Sparrow, Alexander Siddig as Doran Martell and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Malko.

Last season Game of Thrones overtook The Sopranos as the most successful HBO show ever attracting 18.4million viewers per episode Stateside.

Proof of its success, it also holds the dubious honour of being the highest pirated TV show of all time.
