As the festive season comes around once again, animal shelters are reminding would-be owners to “adopt, don’t shop”.

New puppies may be top of the Christmas list for many children this year, but one of Northern Ireland's leading animal shelters is appealing to families to consider adoption instead.

From Pomeranian pooches to energetic Jack Russell's and cats these are the ten strays of Christmas looking for love this year.

These furry friends only have one Santa wish: to find themselves a loving forever home.

Do you have what it takes to give these pets everything they could possibly desire?

How can you adopt a dog if you live in Northern Ireland?

The first thing to do is to visit your local shelter. They are dotted around Northern Ireland and a simple Google search of your area will help you find your closest one.

Once you've visited a shelter and found a dog, you can speak a member of staff about the adoption process.

Remember adopting a pet is a long-term commitment as most dogs live to between 10 and 15 years. They will need attention, routine veterinary treatments, training, grooming and daily care.
