About Chris Gilvear
What was the album that introduced you to Jazz?:
St. Germain - Tourist
The artist that surprised you in 2019?:
Philip Bailey, the Earth, Wind & Fire frontman blew us away with his jazz-soul crossover album Love Will Find A Way.
What is your most memorable jazz gig?:
I think one special moment was the very first Love Supreme Festival in July 2013 where, after a year of build-up to the inaugural event, we witnessed a magical moment: a coming together of great music, jazz fans, beautiful weather and stunning countryside. I remember thinking “this festival is here to stay”.
What is your favourite jazz story?:
Meeting a true hero in Hugh Masekela who, for health reasons, always said no to a handshake and instead would offer a HUG which was, if anything, an even higher honour. I sat in the studio while Hugh told his life story to Sarah Ward, including incredible jazz tales of moving to New York as a teenager and mixing with the true giants of the genre, along with incredibly moving stories from his home in South Africa and its political turmoil.
What was your favourite album in 2019?:
Lettuce - Elevate
