About China Moses
What is your fondest memory on air?
A deep therapy-like interview with the every knowledgeable and empathetic Ruth Fisher for her Full Circle
What is your most memorable jazz gig?
Many I haven’t attended… Only listened to! I have a thing for live records. But as an artist my very first concert paying tribute to Dinah Washington in October 2006 in France. My life was forever changed.
If you were to choose the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the Jazz FM Awards, who would you give it to and why?
Roberta Flack. Because she has spent her whole career quietly carving the soundscape for popular music, while pushing forward that not all l black voices have to be honed in some stereotypical powerhouse melismatic style. She is a great producer and always has a great choice of repertoire. And pretty much perfected the term "non-genre conforming" alongside creating the baseline sound of the “Quiet Storm” that all of the alternative R&B and jazz scene is using. And also Patrice Rushen! Because I really find that she has been underestimated as a pianist composer-producer mentor (I mean Herbie learned a lot from her and Prince had a huge crush and was influenced by her production) songwriter and style icon…
The artist that surprised you in 2019?
Esperanza Spalding after that live-streamed album and Harvard I thought she would take a break then… 12 Little Spells!
