A West Yorkshire Police officer has been handed a five year prison sentence for rape and sexual assault, with both offences said to have happened while he was off duty.

23 year old PC Ben Bottomley, who was formerly based in Kirklees, was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court earlier to four years for rape and one for sexual assault by penetration, to be served concurrently.

He has also been added to the Sex Offenders' Register.

Both offences are said to have happened against the same female victim.

The rape occurred before Bottomley joined the West Yorkshire force, with the sexual assault happening while he was a student officer.

He was suspended from duty in June 2023 and subsequently charged.

A misconduct panel will take place next month which is expected to confirm the termination of his employment at West Yorkshire Police.

He is also expected to be banned from working in policing for life.
