West Yorkshire Police expand stop and search following Wakefield incident
It comes after a man was left with serious injuries during a brawl
West Yorkshire Police have increased the powers for stop and searches in Wakefield city centre following an incident last night.
Officers were called to Kirkgate at around 7pm on Friday evening (March 14th) following reports of an ongoing incident involving around 30 people.
Those involved in the altercation were believed to be holding weapons, with one man being left with serious injuries - requiring him to be taken to hospital.
Following the incident, two men have been arrested on suspicion of affray and currently remain in police custody.
Now, a Section 60 order - which grants temporary powers to West Yorkshire Police officers to conduct stop and searches is in place across Wakefield city centre.
The order came into force at 11pm on Friday night and will remain in place until 11pm on Saturday (March 15th).
In the area where the order covers, police will be able to search people or vehicles for any weapons or dangerous instruments.
Police are also increasing their presence in the area, saying that the moves are to protect the community's safety.
