A former footballer turned Royal Marine, Elliot Kebbie was arrested over false claims he abused his ex-partner six years ago, after police emailed his employers repeating unfounded claims by his former partner.

The 30-year-old won a landmark defamation case against West Yorkshire Police, but despite the pay out, he wants to see the force refer themselves to the police watchdog.

Kebbie said: "When you're going through something like this, you're going to have moments of depression, anxiety, it's just natural.

"And I was already going through tough proceedings to fight to see my daughter anyway."

The former Marine, who is now a life and resilience coach spent 16 months on police bail.

Kebbie said: "There needs to be an IPOC Independent Office for Police Conduct investigation into what's happened here, even after the defamation case, I'd of thought they'd of referred themselves to the IPOC, they didn't.

West Yorkshire Police said they have apologised and that lessons have been learned in order to avoid any repetition.
