Members of the Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Service are walking 75 miles in honour of the 40th anniversary of the devastating Bradford City Stadium fire, which claimed the lives of 56 people.

They set off from Lincoln City's stadium at 9am on Friday morning (4th April), and will make it to Bradford City's Valley Parade.

It'll take them a total of 36 hours, before arriving in West Yorkshire just ahead of kick-off between Bradford City and Crewe Alexandria at 3pm this afternoon (5th April).

They're raising funds for the Firefighters charity and Bradford Burns Unit.

The Bradford City stadium fire occurred during a Third Division match between Bradford City and Lincoln City on Saturday, 11th May 1985, killing 56 spectators and injuring at least 265.

It was caused by a fan attempting to extinguish a lit cigarette, before it slipped through floorboards and fell on rubbish, igniting it.

The disaster led to rigid new safety standards in UK stadiums, including the banning of new wooden grandstands.

It was also a catalyst for the substantial redevelopment and modernisation of many British football grounds within the following thirty years.
