A man has been jailed after pretending to be a police officer, in order to con an elderly woman out of £80,000.

21 year old Isa Janjua, or Murray Road in Rugby, was convicted of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.

He was handed a 45 month sentence.

It comes after an incident in November 2024, where a woman was cold called by someone pretending to be a police officer investigating financial fraud.

Around £80,000 was then stolen from her account, with Janjua taking the victim to a watch shop to make high value purchases.

DC Callum Wallace of West Yorkshire Police said:

“We welcome the sentence in this case, Janjua preyed on an elderly and vulnerable woman, gained her trust, and then abused that trust in the extreme to defraud her for what was very significant sum of money.

“Police will never ask you for your account details over the phone in a cold call.

“Sadly, these scams still occur, if you receive a call asking for your personal details, please hang up. We have lots of support and advice on our website and how to report should these things happen.”
