Households in Leeds will be able to recycle glass in their green bins from today
The days of collecting your glass and waiting until the bag is full to take it to the bottle bank is over... from today glass can be recycled in Leeds
From today, August 1, glass can be put in the recycling bin.
It's a first for Leeds, as before today, glass couldn't be put in the green bin, instead people would take it to the bottle bank instead.
Other areas of West Yorkshire, including Wakefield and Bradford have been allowing glass to be recycled in the recycling bin for years.
The glass you can recycle includes:
- Bottles (leave any plastic or metal caps and lids on and they'll get recycled too)
- Soft drinks and mixer bottles
- Cooking oil bottles
- Sauce and condiment bottles
- Beer, wine and spirits bottles
- Medicine bottles
- Skincare and perfume bottles
- Jars (leave any plastic or metal caps and lids on and they'll get recycled too)
- Jams, marmalade and preserve jars
- Baby food jars
- Chocolate spread jars
- Sauce and condiment jars
- Coffee jars
Things you can't recycle includes Pyrex glass, bulbs and oven glass.
Leeds City Council’s executive member for climate, energy, environment and green space, Councillor Mohammed Rafique said: “We are very excited that along with celebrating Yorkshire Day we will also be celebrating the start of household glass collections in Leeds.
"It has long been an ambition to be able to offer this service, and we are delighted working with our partners we are now able to deliver it for all residents of the city.
“Collecting glass bottles and jars and recycling them will make a big difference to recycling rates in Leeds as well as benefiting the environment and the Yorkshire economy, so we would encourage everyone in the city to make use of this new service and know that from now on green is go for glass.”
