A Leeds man has been sentenced over a sexual assault on a train, which happened as he was travelling back from a football match in London.

It happened on board a Kings Cross to Leeds service on May 21 2023 at around 8:30pm.

49 year old Peter Cooling of Holmsley Lane assaulted a 23 year old woman as she was moving through the carriage.

She instantly reported the incident to police and Cooling was arrested.

He's been handed a five year Sexual Harm Prevention Order banning him from drinking alcohol aboard trains.

He was also ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and pay over £1,300 in fines and costs.

Sergeant Sophie Monaghan, of British Transport Police, said: “Cooling tried to play off his disgraceful and disgusting behaviour as only being football banter. The victim has shown incredible bravery in reporting this incident immediately and in her support with the investigation.

“This type of behaviour will never be tolerated, and there are simply no excuses for this behaviour - alcohol and football can not be blamed.

"I encourage anyone who witnesses any sexual harassment or assault to use our discreet text number, 61016 to report or call 0800 40 50 40. In an emergency, always dial 999.”
