Nottinghamshire Police are keeping an "open mind" over the motive of an attack, which has left three people dead and three more injured.

Witnesses said victims could be heard screaming as they were stabbed, with others mowed down by a van early on Tuesday morning.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested and police have been seen raiding houses near to where the attacks took police.

Police have not yet commented on whether the attack is being treated as terrorism, but it is understood that the man has a mental health history.

The first two victims were found dead in Ilkeston Road in a student area of Nottingham at around 4am, with a third victim discovered in Magdala Road.

Three other people were injured by a van in Milton Street and are in hospital.

Nottinghamshire Police "working with" Counter Terrorism officers

In an update, Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: “We are at the early stages of the investigation and need to determine the motives behind these attacks and will keep the public updated as soon as we are able to say more.

“We are keeping an open mind as we investigate the circumstances surrounding these incidents and are working alongside Counter Terrorism Policing to establish the facts – as we would normally do in these types of circumstances.

“We do have a man in custody who has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Currently, we do not believe there is anyone else involved in this incident."
