"Iron Men" of Merseyside unite to stop suicide
Men who've experienced suicidal thoughts join forces at the iconic Iron Men statues in Crosby for World Suicide Prevention Day
To mark World Suicide Prevention Day, Hits Radio brought together men from across the region to spread a message of hope for those struggling with their mental health.
The "Iron Men", who talk openly about their experiences of suicidal thoughts, came together at the home of Anthony Gormley's namesakes on Crosby Beach in a special event organised by our #MentalHealthMonday Podcast.
There, they shared stories about how they found hope during their darkest times, and urged other men in similar situations to reach out for support.
Iconic setting for an iconic moment
The breath-taking beach setting was the host for our first live recording of our Mental Health Monday show since lockdown began.
Host Mick Coyle interviewed men from different backgrounds, as well as local organisations that put suicide prevention at the heart of what they do for a two-part Podcast special.
Part one of the podcast is now available, with part two to come on Monday 13th Sept.
Mick said: "I wanted to create a moment that people would remember, and I hope that people see the connection between the famous Iron Men, and the 'real-life' counterparts who've showed such courage and strength in speaking openly about their suicide experiences.
"Without a doubt, by normalising these conversations we can help other men and women come forward and encourage them to speak to a friend, family member, colleague, local service or their GP about how they've been feeling."
Worrying suicide stats
Newly released national statistics show 2020 saw an overall decrease in suicides of around 8%, with 5224 taking their own lives.
Concerningly, the Merseyside region saw a 25% increase in suicides during the same period, with 138 lives lost, compared to 110 the year before.

#MentalHealthMonday Podcast
The Mental Health Monday Podcast was launched in January 2017 to share mental health stories each week, challenge stigma and signpost listeners to services across the UK.
In 2018, it hosted the world's first 24 hour mental health radio show, and in 2019 images it created of children's shoes, representing young people lost to suicide, were shared around the world.
It won Radio Programme of the Year at the Mind Media Awards in 2018 & 2019 and has received widespread industry recognition for breaking new ground in mental health broadcasting.
