People in Teesside are being encouraged to take 15 minutes to learn how to perform lifesaving CPR.

Middlesbrough FC fan Phil Boynton, from Teesside, is joining the calls after his uncle had a cardiac arrest at a bus stop on his way to work.

The British Heart Foundation says CPR can make the difference between life and death. Each month more than 2,500 people suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK and tragically less than one in 10 survive, often because those around them don’t have the confidence to perform CPR. Every minute that passes reduces the chances of survival by 10%.

Phil said: "I've got a personal connection to this cause because my uncle had an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in 2010. Thankfully he survived through the quick actions of bystanders who called 999 and the quick application of CPR. His story has a happy ending.

"A cardiac arrest can happen at any place and any time, so the more people who know CPR the more chance that someone's on the scene to help someone. Every minute matters when a cardiac arrest happens, so the more people who know it the more chance we have a positive outcome.

"Just take a few minutes of your time and what they say is action is better than inaction in these things. Even if you're not completely confident in how to do it, it's better than doing nothing so being able to do CPR is much better than standing there not knowing what to do."
