The world's largest inflatable kites is taking to the skies in Redcar this weekend for the first time ever.

Redcar Kite Festival starts at 11am today (Saturday 25th May) and tomorrow (Sunday 26th May) and there will be kites of all descriptions, sizes and colours doing aerial shows over Majuba beach.

Northern Kite Group alongside internationally renowned kite experts will provide spectacular displays which will include choreographed routines, flying frogs, sky-high snakes, leaping lizards, daredevil dragons, and scores of amazing inflatables.

There will also be a host of wider activities on offer to create a great day out by the seaside. From kite flying beginners’ sessions, kite and windmill making workshops, beach art creation with nationally renowned artist James Brunt, music, food and more.

They will also be joined by the Yorkshire fossil festival where you can take part in an exploration of art, science, heritage, and live entertainment.

Duncan Brown is from Northern Kite Group and he said: "The events team at Redcar Council were looking for something to support their vision of creating a distinctive and unique experience which hadn't been previously explored in the area. They've seen what we've been doing at Bridlington Kite Festival and asked the Northern Kite Group if we could organise something similiar at Redcar.

"Kites obviously rely on the wind to fly so they can teach us about the physics of flight, the relationship between wind speeds, lift and the like. Kites have also been used to generate power, electricity and even some plans to power ships. Kites can also link to geography such as wind direction and also world geography.

"We'll have huge inflatable fish, animals and cartoon characters to smaller and more traditional kites and ground displays. We'll also be running a programme of sport and stunt kite flying to music. During the day there'll also be the opportunity for children to join us flying in the display arena."
