Redcar residents are being given a chance to learn more about what could be Europe’s largest battery storage plant due to be sited at the Teesworks industrial site.

The Teesside Gigapark project will enable up to 1,000 Megawatts of additional clean energy to be plugged into the national grid.

An electric vehicle charging facility is another element potentially being brought forward.

The firm behind the planned project NatPower UK is part of the NatPower group, which has 25 years’ experience in the energy sector and has assets developed in 20 countries, including the US, Italy and Kazakhstan.

It has signed an option for up to 50 acres of land with Teesworks Limited, the private/public partnership developing the former steelworks.

A public exhibition of the plans is now taking place next Wednesday (June 26) at St Hilda’s Church in Roseberry Road, Redcar from 2pm to 7.30pm.

Residents will be able to put questions to members of the project team who will be hand to discuss the proposals.

Battery energy storage systems enable energy from renewables, like solar and wind, to be stored and then released when the power is needed most.

Teesworks Ltd chairman Chris Musgrave said: “The Teesside Gigapark is another fantastic vote of confidence in Teesworks and our mission to bring the latest cutting-edge renewable energy projects to the Tees Valley.

“Battery storage forms a vital part of the green energy jigsaw so the prospect of Teesworks being home to the largest facility of its kind in Europe is a truly exciting one.”

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen added: “It is outstanding to be able to welcome another major investor to Teesworks and I look forward to working with NatPower on this development, which will be truly game-changing in scale and impact on our local economy.”

The plant would be sited at Long Acres, which is at the south west corner of the 4,500 acre Teesworks complex on the south bank of the River Tees.
