The new Parliament begins today as members of both Houses return to Westminster following the general election.

The newly elected - and re-elected - MPs from across Teesside and North Yorkshire will be there when business starts at 2.30pm, when members will attend the Lords chamber to hear a Royal Commission from the King to hold the new Parliament.

The House of Commons will then proceed to elect a Speaker, while members of the Lords begin to take an oath of allegiance or make a solemn affirmation to the Crown.

Labour's Jonathan Brash, MP for Hartlepool, said: "People are obviously really concerned about the cost-of-living crisis, making ends meet, safety on the streets, security in their homes, opportunities for the young people. These are the big issues and unfortunately after 14 years, there are many things to fix and that's why we have to get down to work straight away.

"Look, I want to bring more well-paid jobs to Hartlepool, new industry, new technology, new nuclear and I want to rebuild our public services. We need the NHS back on its feet and services returned to our hospitals.

"I want to support our schools and colleges and ensure opportunities for our young people. Those would be my priorities today, tomorrow and for the rest of the time I'm in office."

The State Opening of Parliament will take place on Wednesday 17th July. The King’s Speech, written by the government, will be read from the Throne in the House of Lords chamber. Members of both Houses then get straight down to work debating the contents of the speech over several days.
