Man who stopped cars to check if drivers were "white" in Middlesbrough riots is remanded in custody
The 23 year admitted violent disorder at Teesside Crown Court
A Middlesbrough man who stopped cars during the riots in the town - checking to see if drivers were "white" or "English" - has appeared at Teesside Crown Court.
The court heard how 23 year old Jake Wray, of Seaton Street in Middlesbrough, was seen on video footage challenging drivers in the town on the night of August the 4th, when violent disorder broke out in the town.
He appeared at Teesside Crown Court via a videolink from prison and admitted a single charge of violent disorder.
At a previous hearing at Teesside Magistrates' Court, the prosecution said he approached drivers at a
junction, asked whether they were "white" or similarly, if they were "English" and the court was told "if they were, he seems to allow them to pass".
Judge Francis Laird KC, sitting at the crown court, remanded him in custody to be sentenced next month.
The judge was told Wray was serving a suspended sentence at the time of the violent disorder.
