Families in Teesside are able to help their children be creative this weekend at a festival.

Hullabaloo in the Park is taking place in Darlington's South Park and organisers say the festival is an 'extravaganza of performances, music, dance, storytelling, play spaces, pop-up entertainment, messy play, crafts, workshops and amazing food.

Specially designed for children under 10 and their grownups, the festival has been organised by Theatre Hullabaloo, who say here will be 13 stages of performance and activity, 3 specially designed play areas, dozens of walkabout artists, several crafting and workshop spaces, a host of fantastic food and dedicated picnic areas.

There are over 170 activities to take part in just over three days, and tons of spaces to relax, eat and spend quality time with the family.

Last week Sir Nicholas Serota, Chair of Arts Council England, called on the new Labour government to “ensure that all children, everywhere, have access to the inspiration and joy that culture and creativity bring: for their benefit, and ultimately – as they grow into happier, healthier adults – for ours.” Hullabaloo in the Park is one of the first large-scale creative events for children to deliver since this call was made, and will deliver on Sir Serota’s mission to deliver a fantastic Arts Start for every child in the country.

The festival is on examples of a broader approach to creativity with young children being pioneered in the North East region by Theatre Hullabaloo. Working with Arts Council England and academic institutions including Durham, Leeds, Northumbria and York St John Universities, Theatre Hullabaloo is now working to establish a National Centre for Children’s Creativity.

Ahead of the festival, Ben Dickenson, Chief Executive of Theatre Hullabaloo said: “Hullabaloo in the Park draws on Theatre Hullabaloo’s specialisms in creativity, play and theatre for young children. It’s a moment of joy, family connection. It’s a contribution to prosperity, wellbeing, and richness of this fantastic place. We can’t wait to welcome families to have a fantastic time with us in South Park again this summer.”
