We are hearing how £100,000 in funding is helping to keep a charity in Darlington run its day-to-day operations.

Dogs Trust, like many others, were affected by the Covid pandemic as tomorrow marks five years since the first lockdown was announced.

Now, the team at Darlington's Dogs Trust have been awarded £100k by the People's Postcode Lottery.

Last year, they cared for 833 dogs, successfully rehoming 647. So far this year, over 100 dogs have been adopted from the rehoming centre. Funds raised by players support vital services at the charity including rehoming centre roles, Dog School coaches and post-adoption support.

German Shepherd cross Levi enjoyed celebrating the news with his friends at Dogs Trust Darlington, which was a double celebration as Levi has also just turned two. Levi, who is an affectionate and sociable lad, has been overlooked since March 2024, so is classed as an ‘Underdog’ - the term given to dogs that have spent six months or longer in Dogs Trust care. It is hoped he will soon celebrate another win by finding his forever family this year.

Nikki Holroyd, Manager at Dogs Trust Darlington, said: “We couldn’t quite believe it when we received the news that we would receive £100,000. The money will go towards helping us continue to rehabilitate and rehome dogs in the North East and provide advice and support for dog owners who need us. We couldn’t run the day-to-day operation without the funding, so we’re extremely grateful to People’s Postcode Lottery players for enabling this to happen.”
