Swindon sports hub set to go ahead with backing from Wiltshire FA
Construction is likely to begin in the new year, according to plans
A new community sports hub in Swindon is set to get the go ahead after a major positive response from the public.
Plans had been afoot to construct a multi-sports hub in the Wichelstowe area of Swindon, with backing from the FA's branch in Wiltshire.
The hub - which is set to be located between Middle and East Wichel - is set to feature a number of various facilities for sports, as well as playing provisions.
The money for the project is being funded by Section 106 - which is paid by developers to Swindon Borough Council to help bring infrastructure improvements to the town.
A public consultation was run by the council, receiving almost 400 responses - most of whom gave their backing to the scheme - while asking to have provisions for sports other than football.
The Wiltshire branch of the FA will function as the main operator of the hub, while the Borough Council will be developing the plans with local officials.
Should planning be approved by the authorities, Swindon Borough Council is hoping to break ground on the hub in 2026.
Speaking on the decision, Cllr Kevin Small from Swindon Borough Council thanked the public for giving their support to the scheme.
"The Wilts FA have been brilliant in terms of their support, as have Wroughton Parish Council, and together we are developing a scheme which we hope the whole community can be proud of," he said.
“From a personal point of view, I am delighted the Wilts FA has been identified as the preferred operating partner to run the facility as they have a wealth of experience in running such facilities and I look forward to sharing the updated plans with local residents before we turn them into a reality.”
Simon Russell, the CEO of the Wiltshire branch of the FA, added that it will be a pleasure to deliver on providing facilities to foster football talent in the Swindon and Wiltshire areas.
"It’s really exciting to be involved in a project that will do so much to support people to be more active - whether that is recreationally or playing competitive football," he said.
“Part of our purpose at Wiltshire FA is to work with any and all stakeholders to deliver improvements to existing facilities or to help with the development and delivery of new facilities.
"However, this is special as we will operate the new sports hub - enabling us to engage more directly with the football family and wider community in Swindon."
