RNLI Eastbourne was alerted to a person in the sea just off Eastbourne Pier at 1.59pm yesterday afternoon.

A spokesperson said, "With worsening sea conditions and force 6 winds, our Trent Class lifeboat 'Esme Anderson' launched on service and departed Sovereign Harbour at speed, arriving on scene a short time later.

"Police and local Coastguards located the casualty in the water a short distance from the beach, but due to the lack of water and the rolling surf, the lifeboat was unable to get close enough to assist.

"Coastguard Rescue Officers commenced a successfull water rescue and passed the casualty into the care of the ambulance service for further treatment."
