A fire at Hamilton Quay in Eastbourne was caused by a washing machine catching alight in the early hours of this morning (1st December).

Emergency services were called to the scene just after midnight, where eight fire engines, along with additional equipment including a command unit and aerial ladder platform, attended from local areas, including Eastbourne, Pevensey, Hailsham, Bexhill, and Bohemia Road, as well as West Sussex.

Firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the fire using firefighting foam, hose reels, six breathing apparatus devices, and two thermal imaging cameras.

By 3:00 a.m., the fire was fully extinguished, and crews later returned at 7:15 a.m. for a re-inspection to confirm there were no lingering flames.

The fire service confirmed that the blaze was accidental in nature and originated from a washing machine. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported.
