Police in Ipswich given extra stop and search powers after stabbing
It's after a man was stabbed in the town last night
Police in Ipswich have been given temporary stop and search powers following a stabbing in the town on Monday night.
Officers were called by a member of the public who reported seeing a group of men running along Hawthorn Drive just before 9pm, one of whom appeared to be carrying a large knife.
Police went to the area straight away to carry out searches and received a phone call from Ipswich Hospital not long after to say a man had come in with stab wounds.
He's been treated for injuries to his back and side and remains in hospital in a stable condition.
Police say they think he was attacked near to the parade of shops in Hawthorn Drive just before 8.55pm.
Extra patrols are being carried out in the area today and officers have been given extra powers to stop and search people, without reasonable grounds, until 10.45pm tonight.
Officers say they don't believe there is any risk to the public, but there is an increased risk of violence between parties directly involved or associated with the incident.
Anyone who saw what happened or has information is asked to come forward.
