West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust has confirmed people visiting any of their premises will still need to wear a face mask after rules change tomorrow.

If you're visiting their hospitals, GP surgeries or clinics you must continue to wear a face covering.

It says its because many people infected with Covid-19 can have very mild or no symptoms and can transmit the virus to others without being aware of it.

It added that face coverings are known to be effective in preventing the spread of infection, so keeping this requirement in place will help protect the most vulnerable patients.

It's hoped it'll help prevent staff from getting sick, or needing to self-isolate.

Executive chief nurse at WSFT Susan Wilkinson said: “While the rules on wearing masks are changing in public places, the rate of coronavirus infection remains high.

"Healthcare settings are places where there are many vulnerable people, so to continue to protect our patients, staff and visitors face masks must still be worn in all areas of our hospitals and community clinics, unless you have an exemption.

"Free fluid-resistant face masks are available at entry points, and please respect our staff if you are asked to put a mask on. We thank you for your continued co-operation.”

Dr Melissa Williams, clinical lead GP at Glemsford Surgery, said: “As with all surgeries across the country we will be asking anyone visiting us to continue to wear a face mask unless they are exempt. Covid-19 continues to be a significant threat to people’s health, and we need to do all we can to protect our community.”

It comes as rules on wearing face coverings are due to change in England from Thursday 27th January.

It will no longer be a legal requirement to wear them in any setting.

Although advice remains that you should consider wearing one if in a crowded indoor space, or meeting people you don't usually interact with.
