A man has been jailed for over three years in connection with drug offences in Ipswich.

33 year old Sazan Ahmati of Elmstead Road in Kent was sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court on Monday June 14.

He was stopped by police in April who found a large amount of cash and a sock containing cocaine in his car.

Ahmati was jailed for 40 months for possession of class A drugs and 10 weeks for driving whilst disqualified.

"33-year-old Sazan Ahmati of Elmstead Road in Erith, Kent, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court on Monday 14 June where he was sentenced to more than 40 months' imprisonment.

"It follows an incident on Thursday 15 April when officers from the Sentinel team had cause to stop a grey Peugeot on Woodbridge Road.

"At police request for identification, the driver showed an image of a driver's licence where the picture bore little resemblance to him. A search of the vehicle was then conducted under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

"During the search officers recovered a large quantity of cash and a sock containing white powder, later established to be cocaine.

"Sazan Ahmati was arrested on suspicion of possession of class A drugs and taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where he later confirmed his true identity. A search of his correct name confirmed Ahmati was already disqualified from driving until 2023.

"He was subsequently charged with possession of class A drugs with intent to supply, obstructing a police officer, driving without insurance and driving whilst disqualified.

"Ahmati was sentenced to a total of 40 months for drug possession and 10 weeks for driving whilst disqualified, which will run consecutively.

"He was also disqualified from driving for three years and four months, extended by a further 20 months and five weeks as he was subject to existing disqualification - therefore, a new total of 56 months and five weeks (four years and eight months).

"He was also ordered to pay a £190 victim surcharge."
