Proposals to turn a derelict building at Lowestoft train station into a restaurant, café and workspace will be put to residents during a drop-in session this week.

The suggested redevelopment at Station Quarter will be the subject of a consultation event held at East Point Pavilion on Thursday, August 25, between 10am and 4pm.

Those attending will be invited to look at the proposals and ask questions to representatives from the project team behind them, including Ipswich-based KLH Architects, East Suffolk Council and Network Rail.

Conservative councillor Craig Rivett, deputy leader of East Suffolk Council and cabinet member for economic development, said: “This part of the railway station building is a prominent part of the town centre.

“It has been empty for 50 years and has unfortunately fallen into disrepair.

“The proposed redevelopment will bring this building back into use, retaining its character while adding an attractive and welcoming new space for people to enjoy.

“This is just one of the many ambitious projects the Council is working on to regenerate Lowestoft, attracting more visitors and businesses and enhancing the town for local residents.”

An online consultation will also run from August 25 to September 9, so those who cannot make the event do not miss out. It will be accessible here from August 25: Online Survey Software: Closed Survey (surveymonkey.com).

Liberal Democrat councillor David Beavan, who also leads the Green, Liberal Democrat and Independent group at the council, said: “It would be great to conserve this iconic building with a sustainable use.

“I hope the council will properly engage Lowestoft people in the consultation so we get something people really want.”

The redevelopment of this part of the station building is mentioned in the Lowestoft town investment plan, which formed the basis of a successful £24.9m bid to the Government’s towns fund in 2021.

This plan also lists the redevelopment of the post office, maximisation of green space and improved access for those walking and cycling within the project to rejuvenate Station Quarter.

Ellie Burrows, route director at Network Rail Anglia said: “I know how much the communities we serve value historic railway buildings.

“We’re pleased to be supporting the council’s plans to regenerate the area around the station by releasing part of it for redevelopment.

“Improving the appearance of the station and its surroundings could encourage more people to travel to Lowestoft by rail and support the regeneration of the wider area.”
