A 31-year-old man from Ipswich has been jailed for 26 months for robbery and fraud offences.
Wayne Taylor, of London Road, Ipswich, appeared before Ipswich Crown Court on Thursday 26 August, where he pleaded guilty to robbery and two counts of fraud.
It follows an incident at approximately 8pm on 24 June 2020 in Blenheim Road, when a woman was approached by two men while she was sitting in her parked vehicle, preparing to drive away.
Standing on either side of the vehicle, one man leant through the open window and held the steering wheel to prevent the car from being driven away while the other man leant through the passenger window and, following a tussle, stole the woman’s handbag.
Both men then ran off. The victim sustained bruising to her arm.
Later the same day, banks cards from the stolen handbag were used to make fraudulent purchases at Tesco and Treasure Hut convenience store in the town.
On Monday 20 July, police arrested two men in their 30s from Ipswich on suspicion of robbery. Both men were taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning and were later released under investigation.
Taylor was summonsed to appear before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on 18 June 2021, where he was charged with robbery and two counts of fraud.
The other man was later released and will face no further action.
Last Thursday, Taylor was sentenced to 26 months’ imprisonment when he appeared before Ipswich Crown Court.
Pc Stuart Parkinson, Investigating officer, said: "After what was a terrifying incident for the victim, I am pleased with the sentence handed out by the court and hope that this sends a clear message that offenders should rightly expect to face a significant time in jail for such egregious acts of violence.”
