Suffolk Police urge football fans to enjoy Euro 2024 safely
Supporters are being asked celebrate safely, be drink aware and respect others.
With the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship just one day away, Suffolk police are urging fans to enjoy the matches, behave appropriately and remember the dangers of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.
Officers want everybody to enjoy themselves during the tournament which kicks off on Friday (14 June 2024) and are reminding supporters to celebrate safely, be drink aware and respect others.
Assistant Chief Constable Eamonn Bridger of Suffolk Constabulary said: “We’ve had some great moments in recent championships and there is often a great atmosphere watching these games, whether at home or at other venues. However, it is important everyone is allowed to enjoy the games and return home safely. Importantly that includes when on our roads.
“These tournaments always bring heightened emotions, with great highs and hopefully not too many lows. Regardless of the result, there’s no excuse for anti-social behaviour or the damaging of property. Equally, abusive behaviour will not be tolerated, whether in person or online. Most importantly, we don’t want people getting hurt and want everyone to get home safely.”
With so many fixtures and opportunities for a night out, Suffolk Constabulary will also focus on driving under the influence during the tournament.
Those heading home after a match or driving to work the next morning are being reminded there is no safe drink or drug drive limit. Officers, including those from the Roads and Armed Policing Team, will be on hand at popular venues throughout the tournament to ensure that those travelling home are doing so safely.
Inspector Gary Miller said: “We understand that lots of people will be out celebrating as a part of the month-long event, but this should never involve drink or drug driving.
“Your actions can have devastating consequences, not only for you but also those travelling around you. Do not be selfish and do not put yourself at risk.”
Officers have also been working with licensed premises ahead of the tournament to try to maintain the safety of customers and staff. However, licensed premises showing games also have the responsibility to do so in a safe and responsible manner without adversely impacting on the enjoyment of their customers and the wider public.
Tim Passmore, Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner said: “Watching any sport can be thirsty work and it is perfectly natural to want to enjoy a pint or two when watching the football.
“We don’t want to spoil the fun we just want to remind everyone to act responsibly – abusive and irresponsible behaviour is never acceptable.
“Enjoy the football, be sensible and let’s hope the boys come home with the trophy.”
