It's understood Center Parcs UK and Ireland could be sold for up to 5-billion pounds - in one of the biggest property deals of the year.

The holiday resort has reportedly been put up for sale for nearly double what it was first bought for eight years ago.

The chain of six locations, including Elveden Forest in north Suffolk, is currently owned by Canadian private equity group Brookfield Property Partners.

Brookfield purchased the holiday chain in 2015 for £2.4bn.

Started as a spin-off of Center Parcs Europe, the UK branch of the company opened its first site at Sherwood Forest in July 1987.

The second park opened at Elvedon Forest near Thetford in 1989 - with thousands of holiday makers from the East of England visiting since.

The Suffolk location underwent a major redesign in 2002 after a fire destroyed the park's central plaza as well as a number of shops and restaurants.
