A new case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has been confirmed in commercial poultry near Brandon, West Suffolk.

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) announced the outbreak on Wednesday (29 October).

The outbreak, designated case AIV2025/72, has prompted the immediate introduction of a 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone around the affected premises.

These disease control measures are designed to prevent further spread of the virus through movement restrictions and enhanced biosecurity checks.

Defra confirmed that all poultry at the affected site will be humanely culled to contain the outbreak.

The H5N1 strain, which is classified as highly pathogenic, continues to pose a significant threat to commercial flocks and wild bird populations across the UK.

Authorities are urging poultry keepers within the control zones to remain vigilant and follow all guidance on movement restrictions and disease reporting.
